StJohn Ambulance –  wounds
    

Wounds are injuries to the skin and the soft tissues beneath it.

Types of wounds

a. Contusion
b. Abrasion
c. Incision
d. Punctured wound
e. Laceration
f. Amputation
g. Avulsion

Treatment for wounds

a. Clean the wound.
b. Cover the wound with sterile/clean dressing.
c. Immobilise the injured part if necessary.
d. Seek medical attention if necessary.

Principles of dressing

a. Always face the casualty to monitor his level of consciousness.
b. Reassure the casualty.
c. Expose the wound.
d. Open the first aid dressing as close to the wound as possible.
e. Do not touch the sterile pad.
f. Do not let the bandage tail drop and touch the ground.
g. The injured area must be completely covered.
h. If possible, tie the knot on the pad for additional pressure.

Dressing of wounds using triangular bandages

The triangular bandage is usually used to:
a. Retain dressing and splints in position and to immobilise fractures.
b. Support an injured limb and reduce or prevent swelling.
c. Control bleeding as a secondary bandage.
The longest edge of the triangular bandage is referred to as the “base” and the two
shorter edges as “sides”. The corner opposite the base is called the “apex” and the

remaining two corners are called the “ends”.
